WHAT DOES OUR
COLLOIDAL SILVER DO?
It has been well
known throughout civilisations for thousands of years that silver can be
an effective anti-microbial agent. Silver is capable of killing single
celled organisms such as bacteria, yeasts, moulds and fungi. It is
generally accepted today, that silver affects the enzyme that is
responsible for the cells breathing, so the cell suffocates. Due to the
way that silver acts on these micro-organisms they can not become immune
to silver as they do with antibiotics, which actually poison the cell.
As well as killing single celled organisms, modern science has also
found that silver seems to increase healing effects on plants and
animals if applied to wounds or sores. An American pharmaceutical
company is now manufacturing bandages impregnated with silver gauze
specifically for this reason. Many users of colloidal silver have
suggested that it reduces scarring, although this has not been
scientifically validated at this point.
SO WHAT IS
COLLOIDAL SILVER?
The word Colloid
is the scientific name given to a state of matter where very tiny
particles are suspended or “float” in another medium. A practical
example of a colloid, is fog. If you look closely at fog or steam in a
sauna (same thing) you can see the extremely tiny droplets of water
floating around in the air. They just move around aimlessly, but never
stop. Taking this another step to what we are looking at here, we can
see that colloidal silver is simply minute little clusters of pure
silver atoms small enough to float in water. What keeps the particles
floating and moving is known as “Brownian Motion”. This term is given to
the phenomenon of very minute particles being jostled around in random
fashion by the atoms and molecules surrounding the particle. Early
scientists discovered the colloid state in the 1800's and found it
widely throughout nature. The term “Brownian Motion” was given in honour
of the botanist Robert Brown in 1827. Our blood and milk are good
examples of naturally occurring colloids.
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT COLLOIDAL SILVER?
There are a number
of things that are important to understand fully when it comes to
colloidal silver. Firstly, not all colloidal silvers on the market are
the same. They vary in quality and the way they are manufactured. A
couple of brands including “Australian Colloidal Laboratories” are
excellent, some are acceptable and then there are several products in
the market place that can actually be hazardous. Unfortunately most
products found in the marketplace are not colloidal at all, even though
they state this on the label. They are either
Ionic
orSilver
compounds.
Both are very different to the colloidal state. Ionic simply means that
the silver in the product is individual, charged atoms. Due to the laws
of nature, these ions (unstable atoms) want to bond to another ion
(another unstable atom). Once the ions have bonded together they then
become what is called a compound. Compounds of silver include: silver
nitrate, silver oxide and silver chloride. Nearly all compounds of
silver are highly toxic
to
animals and even if not toxic they can lodge in body tissue permanently
leading to a condition known as argyria, which is a discolouration of
the skin and body tissues. At best, silver compounds even if not toxic
or damaging are far less effective against micro-organisms than pure
Colloidal Silver.
All
silver products
made by “zappers” or generators that are often seen advertised in
magazines and papers are ionic and/or compounds. It is impossible for
these devices to produce a true colloid. Any one who disputes this
statement is invited to submit a sample of product to an appropriate
laboratory for testing. Please bear in mind that most “manufacturers” of
so called Colloidal Silver have merely bought a zapper or machine and
set themselves up as a so called producer of silver colloid. Just as
bad, or even worse is chemically made silver. This type of silver is
easy to recognise as it has a very high amount of silver in it,
expressed as “parts per million” or PPM on the label. In fact anything
over 20 PPM is either, not true to label, or a
silver compound (chemically made). Chemically made silvers are either
made by putting silver in nitric acid, thereby forming silver nitrate
and other compounds, or by binding the silver to a “protein”. Keeping it
short and simple, it is either not overly effective, toxic, or both!
